Former Sunderland midfielder Eric Roy is in charge of a Stade Brest side that will have been among a rather large group of sides concerned by the reduction of teams in Ligue 1 with the league going from 20 to 18 teams over the summer. Brest would have been expected to be involved in what is likely to be a congested and competitive lower part of the table.
However, after seven matches of the 2023/24 campaign, they have suffered just one defeat so far this season and are level on points with Monaco at the top-of-the-table. They shared a goalless draw with Nice in a top-of-the-table clash last weekend and have, remarkably, managed just eight goals in their seven games, despite the impressive results.
TOULOUSE
With impressive off-field business, part of the ownership group that also controls AC Milan, Toulouse gained promotion back to the French top-flight in 2022 and enjoyed a comfortable mid-table finish, whilst also qualifying for the UEFA Europa League group stages for this season as a consequence of winning the Coupe de France.
The visitors come into this on the back of a 1-0 win at home to LASK in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League in midweek. That victory followed up a much-needed victory in Ligue 1 last weekend, in which they hammered Metz by three goals to nil. They have had a generally difficult campaign so will be very pleased with those victories.

THE PREDICTION
The expectation is that Brest eventually slow down and fade down the table towards the middle. However, the longer they keep up their form the more the idea of European qualification will grow in their minds. They will want to head into the October international break sitting in the top three. They face a Toulouse side that have had an upturn in their form with back-to-back victories but their European escapades are a bit of a distraction and Brest, knowing that and also having home advantage, are favourites for this one.
