THE LOWDOWN

BREST

With Ligue 1 being reduced from 20 to 18 teams over the summer, it means those sides that narrowly avoided relegation are in more danger as the bottom end of the table becomes more congested. Stade Brest are one of those sides that will be concerned but they actually got off to a flying start this time around, albeit with displays that aren’t likely to be replicated throughout the campaign.

On the opening day of the season, they faced last season’s second-placed side Lens and went 2-0 down early on but they managed to fight back and somehow win the game by three goals to two. They followed that up by winning away at newly-promoted Le Havre before a comfortable 2-0 defeat at Stade Velodrome against Marseille last weekend, in their most recent outing.

RENNES

After another summer of fairly heavy investment, at least in relative terms to most of the rest of Ligue 1, Stade Rennais will expect to be pushing towards the top three and UEFA Champions League qualification this season. They have, though, recently lost star winger Jeremy Doku to Manchester City and will hope, after Lovro Majer’s departure earlier this month, he is the final high profile sale.

Rennes started the season with a 5-1 thrashing of newly-promoted Metz on the opening day, in which Doku managed to get on the scoresheet. They have since shared a 1-1 draw with a Lens side that finished second last season and then, last weekend, more frustratingly, they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to newly-promoted and ten man Le Havre.

THE TEAM NEWS

BREST

Eric Roy will still persist with the same side that began the campaign with back-to-back victories. He remains without Adrien Lebeau due to injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Bizot; Lala, Chardonnet, Brassier, Locko; Camara, Lees-Melou, Magnetti; Del Castillo, Mounie, Le Douaron

UNAVAILABLE: Lebeau (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

RENNES

After the departure of Jeremy Doku, Bruno Genesio will need a tactical shake up but they have a deep and strong squad, even with the injury to Warmed Omari.

PREDICTED XI (4-1-4-1): Mandanda; Assignon, Wooh, Theate, Truffert; Matic; Blas, Bourigeaud, Le Fee, Gouiri; Kalimuendo

UNAVAILABLE: Omari (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

THE PREDICTION

Despite potentially being perceived as relatively fortunate in their opening victories, Eric Roy does possess quite a fun and attacking side. Brest have the likes of Romain Del Castillo, Steve Mounie, Jeremy Le Douaron who can all really hurt their opposition. Stade Rennais have an excellent squad full of similarly impressive, albeit obviously more impressive, attacking talent that have begun to play a good style of football under Genesio. Rennes are favourites for what could be a thrilling game for the neutral.

TIP: RENNES TO WIN & OVER 2.5 GOALS
