THE LOWDOWN

NEWCASTLE

  • Newcastle lifted themselves out of the relegation places in midweek with a crucial 3-1 victory over Everton, drawing them to within one point of the Toffees, but the Magpies could find themselves back in the bottom three by the time they kick off here.
  • Left-back Matt Targett cannot play against his parent club and Kieran Trippier is a huge injury doubt, leaving Eddie Howe with a headache in both full-back positions heading into this match.

ASTON VILLA

  • Aston Villa played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Leeds Utd last time out although Steven Gerrard’s side will be extremely disappointed not to have gained the three points when considering that they were leading 3-1.
  • A sending off for centre-back Ezri Konsa sees him suspended here, which may lead to a first Aston Villa start for Calum Chambers in the Premier League.

THE PREDICTION

Aston Villa have a tough test on their hands here against a Newcastle side full of confidence and backing by a home support with newfound belief that their team can stay up. However, Steven Gerrard’s men boast far more of an attacking threat than Everton and have the quality to take advantage of any poor defending by the Magpies. Four of Aston Villa’s last five Premier League matches have seen both teams score, an outcome replicated in three of Newcastle last four top flight fixtures. With that in mind, the shrewd move would be to back each side to score in this encounter as well as both are expected to prioritise attack over defence.

Tip: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
