THE LOWDOWN

CHELSEA

Mauricio Pochettino has once again had to defend himself and his players, suggesting he is pleased with performances, despite the fact their performances are inconsistent within actual games themselves. They sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table with their only real hope of salvaging success from this season being the FA Cup.

The Blues come into this one on the back of a 2-2 draw against Brentford in a west London derby at the Gtech Community Stadium, last weekend. They took the lead in that through Nicolas Jackson in the first-half but were rocked for much of the second-half, eventually falling behind before centre-back Axel Disasi rescued a point.

NEWCASTLE

If Eddie Howe wants to avoid his Newcastle United side being labelled the Premier League’s ‘entertainers’ compared to Kevin Keegan’s Magpies team of the mid-to-late nineties then he has to ensure his team become, frankly, a bit less entertaining. Their 27 matches so far this season have consisted of 102 goals.

The inconsistent north-east club come into this one on the back of a much-needed, emphatic defeat of Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’ Park, last weekend. Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon made it 2-0 before half-time before former Southampton defender Tino Livramento notched a third late on in the second-half.

THE TEAM NEWS

CHELSEA

Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that left-sided England international duo, Levi Colwill and Ben Chilwell, will be unavailable for the Blues this weekend. Their compatriot, Conor Gallagher, is also a doubt for Monday due to illness.

The west Londoners will also remain without the likes of Wesley Fofana, Reece James and Christopher Nkunku but Benoit Badiashile and Carney Chukwuemeka are back in training, albeit this week may come a little soon for them.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Petrovic; Gusto, Silva, Disasi, Cucurella; Fernandez, Caicedo; Madueke, Palmer, Sterling; Jackson

UNAVAILABLE: Fofana (Injured), Colwill (Injured), James (Injured), Chilwell (Injured), Ugochukwu (Injured), Lavia (Injured), Nkunku (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Badiashile (Injured), Chukwuemeka (Injured), Gallagher (Injured)

NEWCASTLE

Eddie Howe has confirmed that Kieran Trippier will be unavailable for matches both this weekend against Chelsea and then their FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City next weekend with the hope being he will return after the international break.

The Magpies will also be without Lewis Hall as he cannot face his parent club, whilst the likes of Nick Pope, Joelinton and Callum Wilson remain sidelined through injury with Sandro Tonali still out suspended.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Dubravka; Livramento, Schar, Botman, Burn; Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes, Willock; Murphy, Isak, Gordon

UNAVAILABLE: Pope (Injured), Trippier (Injured), Hall (Ineligible), Joelinton (Injured), Tonali (Suspended), Wilson (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Targett (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

In December, these two met at Stamford Bridge in an EFL Cup quarter-final with Chelsea eventually winning a penalty shootout after they had scored a late equalising goal via Mykhaylo Mudryk. What has been common for the hosts, as well as the visitors as has been mentioned, is the tendency for games involving them to be entertaining and high-scoring. For example, Chelsea’s 26 games this season have consisted of 87 goals. Regardless of the end match result of this one, a thriller for the neutral does appear to be in store on Monday evening.

TIP: OVER 2.5 GOALS
