THE LOWDOWN

WESTERLO

Following promotion to the Belgian top-flight in 2022, Westerlo enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, finishing inside the top eight and the end of season UEFA Europa Conference League spots, despite losing their key striker Lyle Foster in the January transfer window. Jonas De Roeck coached a very attacking and open team last year but could well be suffering from ‘second season syndrome’.

They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting rock-bottom in the Jupiler Pro League table with no wins in their opening nine matches; they have shared three draws with six defeats so far. Their entertaining style has remained, though, with 29 goals coming in their nine matches. They shared a thrilling 3-3 draw with Genk last weekend, scoring an 88th minute equaliser.

KORTRIJK

As has been mentioned throughout the early stages of this season, Kortrijk are and were concerned about the increased competitiveness down at the bottom end of the Jupiler Pro League table with the league being reduced from 18 to 16 teams. Kortrijk are very much one of those sides that struggled last year and, therefore, would be expected to struggle again.

They remain under the management of Edward Still and performances, after some signings late in the summer transfer window, have gradually improved in these early stages. They come into this on the back of a much-needed 2-1 win at home to Cercle Brugge, ending an eight-match winless run to start the campaign.

THE TEAM NEWS

WESTERLO

Westerlo have no fresh injury or suspension concerns so they could name an unchanged side for the visit of fellow strugglers Kortrijk this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Bolat; Bayram, Tagir, Jordanov; Reynolds, Haspolat, Sydorchuk, Neustadter; Matsuo, Chadli; Stassin

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE: Bernat (Injured), Yow (Injured), El Hari (Injured)

KORTRIJK

Edward Still remains without the injured Thierry Ambrose but the visitors are expected to name an unchanged eleven as they face Westerlo this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Vandenberghe; Mampassi, Silva, Radovanovic; Mehssatou, Sissako, Kadri, Kana, De Neve; El Idrissy, Davies

UNAVAILABLE: Ambrose (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Challouk (Injured), Henen (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Ahead of the tenth match day in this season’s Jupiler Pro League, these are the two sides that are languishing down at the very bottom end of the table. Kortrijk are two points ahead of rock-bottom Westerlo with their first victory of the season coming last weekend. Westerlo have remained entertaining and will sense a major opportunity to get at Kortrijk because if they don’t win this one then they may well resign themselves. Given that, it could well be an entertaining encounter for the neutral.
