Felix Auger-Aliassime continued his resurgence with an impressive straight sets victory over Andrey Rublev in the round-of-16. The Canadian had lost his last five matches against Rublev and went an early break down but recovered well to take the first set as he consistently exerted pressure on the 15th seed with his aggressive ball striking. He continued the momentum in the second and third sets, not being broken on serve as he won 7-5 6-3 6-4 after two hours and 16 minutes.
He now takes on Alex de Minaur after he ended Leandro Riedi’s incredible run at the tournament. The world number 435 ran out of steam, with the Australian easily coming through to win 6-3 6-2 6-1 after just an hour and 33 minutes.
Auger-Aliassime leads the head-to-head 2-1 and 1-0 on outdoor hard court, having beaten De Minaur in Cincinnati three years ago. Nevertheless, De Minaur won their last meeting in Rome.
Auger-Aliassime has been performing at such a high level and will take a lot of confidence from his victories over Rublev and Alexander Zverev in the previous rounds. De Minaur in contrast, has not faced anyone inside the top 50 and may be slightly undercooked in terms of performance.
