England have a lot of really poor ODI batters, mainly through lack of experience playing the 50-over format throughout their careers. Joe Root is not one of them though and his unbeaten 99 expertly guided England through a run chase of 234 which was made trickier than it should’ve been due to a constant loss of wickets. India had reduced England to 8/2 at one stage, underlining the importance of Root’s knock at number three.
India misfired with the bat in Cardiff and at Lord’s, you would expect them to turn things around on a ground with plenty of happy memories when you look down the years of Indian cricketing history. Root bailed England out on Thursday and it felt like the papering over of some big cracks. Back India to respond with a much better batting display that sees them retake a series lead.
