THE TEAM NEWS

SURREY STARS

  • Surrey began the defence of their Kia Super League title with a narrow nine-run win over the Yorkshire Diamonds at Emerald Headingley after hitting 130/9 from their 20 overs, and they had their bowling unit to thank for that.
  • Figures of 3/17 from Laura Marsh from her four overs was the catalyst for the Stars, who took three Yorkshire wickets in the final over to dismiss Yorkshire for 121 and claim an opening day win.
  • Sarah Taylor marked her return to action by top scoring with 43, after the England wicketkeeper batswoman missed the three Ashes T20 games against Australia and her return to form gives them a massive boost but they will expect other batters to step up here.

LANCASHIRE THUNDER

  • Lancashire fell to Southern Vipers in their first game of the 2019 Kia Super League, after being bowled out for 132 chasing 167 to win at Aigburth in what was a disappointing display overall.
  • Opener Georgie Boyce top scored for Thunder with 43, but Australian oversees Tahlia McGrath was the only other woman to contribute with a score of over 18 from the Thunder’s entire batting line-up, hitting 28 from 20 balls as they fell short in the run chase.
  • England’s left-arm orthodox spinner Sophie Eccleston continued her fine summer with the ball, the 20-year-old picking up one wicket for only 12 runs in her four overs, and she is going to be key once again here.

THE PREDICTION

Surrey look a formidable outfit once again this year in the Kia Super League and will look to back up their winning start against a Lancashire side potentially low on confidence. Much will depend on whether Indian oversees star Harmanpreet Kaur will fire with the bat for the Red Rose. The Stars however are boasting Laura Marsh, Nat Sciver and Marizanne Kapp within their bowling ranks. They should have enough quality to restrict the Thunder and pick up another victory at Guildford.
