London Spirit made the eliminator of last year’s Men’s Hundred, a significant improvement on 2021 but to do the same this year already looks a remote prospect, due to sheer number of big-name players they have lost. Australian overseas duo Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh have been pulled out of the tournament by Cricket Australia, whilst England fast bowler Mark Wood is also set to be rested. Add Olly Stone’s injury into the mix and this depleted Spirit squad could be in for some punishment. It’s a real test for new captain Dan Lawrence, appointed following Eoin Morgan’s retirement last year.
OVAL INVINCIBLES
Oval Invincibles also suffered overseas disappointment pre-tournament with the news that pace bowler Ihsanullah will miss the competition through injury. Australian Spencer Johnson replaces him, but in regards to the entire squad, Oval Invincibles have retained the Surrey/Kent core of the past couple of years. Sam Billings captains a team with significant top order firepower in Will Jacks, Jason Roy, Heinrich Klaasen and Jordan Cox. There’s lots of experience within the bowling attack in the form of the Curran brothers, Danny Briggs and Sunil Narine, with bolter Gus Atkinson potentially set to play a big role this year also.
THE PREDICTION
It will be interesting to see how London Spirit set up when considering the sheer number of key players unavailable who they would have counted on back when the draft was undertaken. Either way though, they lack genuine pace with the ball and strength-in-depth with the bat, so Oval Invincibles will fancy rolling through the Spirit should they take a couple of early wickets. Billings’ side meanwhile, looks stacked with options, power, control and points of difference. Expect the Invincibles to get off to the ideal start and defeat London Spirit.
