Carlos Alcaraz vs Ben Shelton prediction

After coming back from the brink against Taylor Fritz, battling back from two match points down, Carlos Alcaraz had a much easier time of it in his semi-final against Casper Ruud, winning 6-4, 6-4.

His serve was outstanding, winning 86% of points behind his first serve, and he did not face a single break point. He also won 29 points on Ruud’s serve compared with just nine for Ruud on his, in an all-round dominant display that showed his class.

He now takes on Ben Shelton, who he last met in the US Open quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows, when the American came out on top in a memorable five-set thriller. That was Shelton’s first win in four meetings with Alcaraz, with the Spaniard having won their first three encounters.

Shelton has warmed up nicely in this tournament, and he had to dig deep in his semi-final to overcome Luca Van Assche 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. That was the third successive three-set match he has been involved in, on consecutive days.

With Alcaraz having received a walkover in the Round of 16 when Matteo Berrettini withdrew, we can fully expect him to be the fresher of the two men coming into this final. He is also playing somewhere close to his best now, unlike at the US Open, when he was not completely firing on all cylinders after his wrist injury.

We fully expect Alcaraz to put down a marker and be at his best to avenge that loss to Shelton. He is playing some impeccable tennis right now, and we expect the Spaniard to grab the title.
