THE TEAM NEWS

TORONTO NATIONALS

  • Toronto Nationals were beaten in their opening match by the defending champions Vancouver Knights by eight wickets as their total of 159/5 did not prove to be nowhere near enough against the strong Knights batting line-up.
  • The downfall for the Nationals in that match was partially down to the slow batting by Calum MacLeod and Yuvraj Singh who combined for just 31 from 50 balls and that slowed the innings down significantly and despite some big hitting from Thomas, Klaasen and Pollard, that ultimately cost them.
  • With Mitch McClenaghan being their top bowler and an inexperienced unit supporting him, they are going to have to score much quicker and heavier to be aiming for 200 if they wish to compete in matches and that has to be the target here against the Royals.

EDMONTON ROYALS

  • Edmonton Royals lost in the play-offs in the 2018 version of the T20 Global but they will have renewed hope for the new campaign as they have had a major overhaul of their squad under new coach Stephen Fleming.
  • The Royals will be led by New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson and he will be supported by an impressive cast of overseas stars which include Faf du Plessis, Mohammad Hafeez, Jimmy Neesham, Sherfane Rutherford, Ben Cutting and Shadab Khan.
  • Alongside a fearsome batting line-up, they have some strong bowling options to support Shadab Khan as Blackcap Jimmy Neesham demonstrated his qualities with the ball in the recent World Cup while Mohammad Nawaz, Ben Cutting and Mohammad Hafeez can offer good support with their bowling.

THE PREDICTION

Neither of these teams particularly impressed last year and the fact Toronto Nationals lost their opening game comprehensively does not bode well for the new campaign. Edmonton Royals will be raring to go in their first game and they have a well-balanced side unlike the Nationals whose bowling attack is below par. In addition, the Royals have some leaders in Williamson and Du Plessis, and they will demand their team hits the ground running, and they have to be favoured here to make a winning start.
