THE TEAM NEWS

NORTHERN WARRIORS

  • Northern Warriors got their campaign off to a stunning start with the usual fireworks from Andre Russell who showed once again why the defending champions have to be considered to defend their crown once again this year.
  • Russell took two wickets and smashed an impressive unbeaten 58 from just 24 balls that led the Warriors to an easy nine-wicket victory with a massive three overs to spare against Maratha Arabians showing that targets of any less than 120 should be comfortably within their reach.
  • The bowlers were in excellent form with Chris Wood and Wahab Riaz looking good but it was Russell who led the way with 2/12 from his two overs and while he has had injury problems throughout 2019, this format suits him perfectly and he should be fine to play back-to-back matches throughout this tournament.

QALANDARS

  • The Qalandars were left kicking their heels on Friday as they could only manage a draw against Team Abu Dhabi despite only needing two runs from their final two balls to win the match.
  • The bowling unit looked good in restricting the Abu Dhabi side to 103/6 as Sri Lankan fast bowler Lahiru Kumara took 2/22 from his two overs but despite looking in control of the run chase, Phil Salt lost his wicket on the penultimate ball and could not see them through.
  • With a strong English contingent in the side, they will look to bounce back here and while they will be frustrated at not winning their opening game, they do possess the batting firepower with Dawid Malan, Tom Banton, Phil Salt, Laurie Evans and Jordan Clark to match the Warriors here.

THE PREDICTION

This will be an intriguing shootout between two teams who looked strong in their opening matches and two of the biggest hitting batting line-ups in the tournament. While the Qalandars could only draw their opening match, they have plenty more to give and it would be no surprise if they matched the Warriors toe-for-toe. So much will depend on the toss and the team chasing will be favoured, but it is difficult to go against the defending champions Warriors after their opening display which was easily the standout performance on the opening day.
