THE TEAM NEWS

SRI LANKA

  • Sri Lanka have struggled in white ball cricket for a sustained period but there have been shoots of hope in their recent matches, especially in T20 cricket, and they will look to utilise those efforts to galvanize them for this tournament.
  • They earned a series win over India in July which has to be the blueprint for how to attack this T20 World Cup and having won their last four T20i matches, they also bring some form and momentum into this opening clash with Namibia.

NAMIBIA

  • Namibia’s preparations for this tournament have not gone to plan having lost warm-up matches against Oman and Scotland and while they will feel that they can cause Sri Lanka some problems, even performing at their very best might not be enough for them to win.
  • If the Namibians are to cause the Sri Lankans any serious concerns, the pressure will likely fall on the shoulders of batsman Craig Williams who comes into the competition in superb form having notched a half-century in four of Namibia’s last five T20i matches.

THE PREDICTION

Sri Lanka would have been dreading this T20 World Cup just a few months ago owing to their struggles in not only T20 cricket but white ball cricket on the whole. They have however managed to somewhat turn their fortunes around and their series win over India in the middle of the year will have given them hope ahead of this event. They take on Namibia in this opening game and will be confident of success but they have to be wary of complacency. While the Sri Lankans should win relatively comfortably, they will have to be wary of the threat posed by Craig Williams who can continue his excellent run of form and finish as Namibia’s top scorer with the bat.
