THE LOWDOWN

GALLE TITANS

Dasun Shanaka leads Galle Titans into battle for the first time in 2023 and the Sri Lankan batter will no doubt have his eye on a good start to the tournament personally in the form of a significant score with the bat. Both Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa are seen as the local players capable of hitting the bulk of their side’s runs. However, the overseas players within the squad boast plenty of T20 experience such as Chad Bowes and of course, Bangladesh superstar Shakib Al Hasan. The latter is also likely to contribute heavily with the ball, as is Akila Dananjaya and Lahiru Kumara.

DAMBULLA AURA

Dambulla Aura had a 2022 Lanka Premier League to forget, finishing rock bottom of the group stage with just two wins to their name from eight matches. The only way is up from here though and Dambulla have certainly assembled a squad capable of doing that. The most eye-catching player to be recruited was Sri Lanka star Aviska Fernando, scorer of 339 runs in the 2022 Lanka Premier League for champions Jaffna Kings, more than any other player. He’s joined by Kusal Perera and Sadeera Samarawickrama, who was also part of that triumphant Jaffna team, scoring 44 from just 27 balls in the final. There’s a heavy Australian flavour to the overseas ranks in the same of Hayden Kerr and Ben McDermott, a left-arm bowling all-rounder and big-hitting wicket-keeper batter respectively.

THE PREDICTION

Although on paper, Dambulla Aura have assembled a fine team and are well-placed to make up for their nightmare 2022 campaign, putting all the pieces of the puzzle together straight away won’t be easy. As a collective unit, time may well be needed for them to form a consistently winning formula and they’ve been dealt a tough start against a dangerous Galle Titans side. With plenty of experience, tactical nous and proven winners among their ranks, it could well be easier for them to hit the ground running compared to Dambulla and with that in mind, backing Galle Titans has to be favoured here.
