Costa Rica team news: Navas back in the fold

The most notable name in the Costa Rican team is goalkeeper Keylor Navas. The 38-year-old has been capped 117 times by his country and recently came out of retirement after originally calling it a day just over a year ago after a request from head coach Miguel Herrera. His experience between the sticks will be crucial.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Navas; C. Mora, Mitchell, Faerron, Calvo; Bran, Galo, Alcocer, J. Mora; Madrigal, Ugalde

Suriname team news: Question mark over Lonwijk

After scoring in Suriname’s last game against El Salvador, Justin Lonwijk was taken off in the first half and his fitness must be called into question ahead of this opening group game, with Denzel Jubitana standing by.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Hahn; Boetius, Abena, Pinas, Dijksteel; Rigters, Montnor, Klas, Turfkruier; Vlijter, Jubitana

Questionable: Lonwijk (Fitness)

Costa Rica vs Suriname prediction

Whilst most will expect Mexico to end up winning Group A, second-place appears to be very much up for grabs and both these two nations have their eyes on claiming that spot. This makes three points here crucial and an entertaining contest is likely to be on the cards as Costa Rica and Suriname push bodies forward in order to claim those points.

What Costa Rica have over their opponents, is more experience in major tournament fixtures. The return of Navas between the sticks will bring confidence and comfort to what is already a solid backline and Suriname won’t find it easy breaching the Costa Rican defence. It would be no surprise if this turns out to be the foundation that leads to an eventual victory here for Miguel Herrera’s men.
