Chris Billam-Smith: Out to avenge an amateur defeat

Chris Billam-Smith (22-2) will be looking to avenge his loss to Chev Clarke from May 2016 at Liverpool’s Echo Arena, when Clarke got the decision over three competitive rounds in the final of the national amateur championships.

Credit to Billam-Smith, who rebounded from that to enjoy an incredibly successful professional career, and he will now look to put that defeat right.

Since losing his WBO cruiserweight title to Gilberto Ramirez, Billam-Smith has responded by beating Brandon Glanton by unanimous decision and forcing Ryan Rozicki to retire at the end of the seventh round in June.

Chev Clarke: Impressive comeback after a scare against Massey

Chev Clarke has had a much shorter professional career than Billam-Smith, despite being only a year younger.

After losing his British cruiserweight title to Viddal Riley at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April 2025, one of only two defeats in his career, Clarke has responded by beating Anthony Hollaway and then Jack Massey in his last two fights.

His fight against Massey, on the same card as Billam-Smith’s win over Rozicki, saw him knocked to the canvas twice in the fourth round before he recovered to stop Massey in the seventh. It was an impressive comeback, but it also raises some red flags.

Chris Billam-Smith vs Chev Clarke prediction

Billam-Smith will be fired up to get the win at the Copper Box Arena on Saturday night and avenge his amateur loss to Clarke back in 2016.

Billam-Smith really kicked on with his career from that stage onwards, while Clarke remained an amateur for a lengthy period before eventually turning professional in 2022. Billam-Smith has fought at a much higher level for a lot longer, and there is a clear sense that he has reached a far greater level than Clarke.

Clarke has the power to cause anybody problems, and that will be the risk for Billam-Smith if he gets embroiled in any kind of slugfest. However, he should be more intelligent than that, and we expect him to box his way to a sensible win, likely on the scorecards.

Prediction: Chris Billam-Smith to win by decision
