Dalton Smith vs Alberto Puello prediction

Dalton Smith makes the first defence of his WBC light welterweight title on Saturday as he returns to the ring for the first time since pulling off a magnificent win over Subriel Matias at the start of 2026.

The world champion will be fired up in front of his home crowd, but he has not been handed an easy defence to start his reign as he takes on the talented and durable Puello.

Puello hails from the Dominican Republic and is incredibly experienced, having had 26 fights and held two world titles. The 32-year-old lost his WBC super lightweight title to Matias in July 2025, but bounced back in style in July this year by stopping Miguel Angel Bolano.

There is a sense that Puello may be being a little underestimated, with the hometown fighter clearly favoured by the bookmakers. That is likely because Smith has yet to taste defeat in his 19-fight professional career so far.

Puello has an incredible chin and is as durable as they come, and that has all the makings of another incredibly tough assignment for Smith. Smith arguably has the edge in power, but he is going to be tested and pushed all the way here.

Based on the odds, we would lean towards the underdog Puello, but either way we can see this fight going to the judges’ scorecards.

Prediction: Alberto Puello to win by decision
