THE TEAM NEWS

YORKSHIRE VIKINGS

Coach: Andrew Gale

Captain: Tom Kohler-Cadmore

  • Yorkshire just missed out on the Vitality Blast quarter finals, finishing 5th place in the Northern group and the White Rose will look back on their one run defeat against bitter rivals Lancashire in particular, as a crucial moment in their campaign which they will want to improve upon this year.
  • The Vikings have recruited West Indian batsman Nicolas Pooran as their overseas player for this year’s Vitality Blast, following a breakout World Cup campaign in which Pooran accumulated 367 runs for the men in Maroon as much is expected of the explosive wicket-keeper/batsman.
  • England stars Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Adil Rashid have not been named in the squad for this match while Steven Patterson is rested but the batting remains strong with Ballance, Brook, Kohler-Cadmore and Lyth joining Pooran, while all-rounder David Willey will have a point to proving after being left out of the World Cup squad.

NOTTS OUTLAWS

Coach: Peter Moores

Captain: Dan Christian

  • Notts Outlaws fell to a disappointing 28-run defeat at the hands of Worcestershire Rapids in their opening game of the 2019 T20 Blast on Thursday and it was ultimately an average bowling performance and a poor batting display which led to that loss.
  • Harry Gurney took a wicket with his very first ball on Thursday against Worcestershire Rapids and he proved once again how key he will be in the pace bowling department in this T20 Blast campaign but they will want to improve upon that performance overall.
  • Other than Alex Hales’ half century, the rest of the batting failed to click as they were always behind the chase against a strong Rapids’ bowling attack, and they will have to do better here in what will be another tough test, and that could see Luke Fletcher come into the side.

THE PREDICTION

Despite missing a trio of England stars for their opening game, Yorkshire Vikings will have high hopes in this competition this season but will be hoping to make a better start than they did last year. The loss of Root, Rashid and Bairstow appears drastic on paper, but they are accustomed to playing with their international players. The arrival of Pooran and the availability of Willey is significant for them and they still have plenty of quality in their ranks.

The Outlaws were significantly below par in their opening match on Thursday but it seems unfathomable that they can be so poor once again. The batting especially will have to improve drastically to match Yorkshire here and whichever team bats best should edge this in what should be high-scoring shootout.
