THE TEAM NEWS

DERBYSHIRE FALCONS

Coach: Dominic Cork

Captain: Billy Godleman

  • Derbyshire Falcons make their debut in this season’s T20 Blast campaign hoping to make a strong start as they welcome the Vikings to Queen’s Park aiming to do better than last season’s seventh-placed finish in the North Group.
  • They may not have any marquee signings like many other teams but Dutch all-rounder Logan van Beek will hope to make his mark as will big-hitting Kolpak signing Leus du Plooy who could be a revelation in the tournament if he clicks into gear.
  • The Falcons will take heart from the fact they have beaten Yorkshire in their last four T20 meetings but they will have to be at their best once again here assuming the weather does not affect the play.

YORKSHIRE VIKINGS

Coach: Andrew Gale

Captain: Tom Kohler-Cadmore

  • Yorkshire Vikings’ opening match against Notts Outlaws was abandoned without a ball being bowled on Friday due to the rain so they kick off their campaign in Derbyshire hoping to get off to a winning start.
  • The squad remains the same for this match as England stars Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Adil Rashid are unavailable while Steven Patterson is rested but the batting remains strong with Ballance, Brook, Kohler-Cadmore and Lyth joining Pooran, along with all-rounder David Willey.
  • Adam Lyth is just 21 runs short of becoming Yorkshire’s all-time leading runscorer in the T20 format so he will be motivated to break that record and the Vikings will likely name the same team that was expected to play against the Outlaws on Friday before it was rained off.

THE PREDICTION

After Yorkshire’s match on Friday was washed out, this match will be the first for both teams if it can escape the rain. The Vikings have the star power but the Falcons should not be underestimated and they have beaten Yorkshire in their last four meetings. Godleman, Du Plooy, Madsen, Rampaul and Critchley are talented players that can cause any team problems and they will fancy their chances at home. If Pooran can fire early, then Yorkshire have the edge in batting but this really is a game that could go either way.
