THE TEAM NEWS

AUSTRALIA

  • Reigning world champions Australia moved a step closer to recording a 12th World Cup as they progressed to the semi-finals with a 100% record after edging out rivals New Zealand in their final Group F game.
  • After already achieving five consecutive wins, the Australians were able to hold off a fourth-quarter comeback by New Zealand to set up a semi-final with South Africa as they bid to maintain their record of never finishing any worse than second in a World Cup.
  • Aiming to win the tournament for a fourth consecutive occasion, Australia have been ruthless with the ball and have scored 475 goals so far with Caitlin Bassett and Caitlin Thwaites combining for 303 of those.

SOUTH AFRICA

  • South Africa lost their first game of the 2019 Vitality Netball World Cup in their final preliminaries stage two game against England but their place in the semi-finals was already secure.
  • The only downside of that defeat is that they must now face reigning champions Australia instead of New Zealand as they hosts ran out 58-47 winners which meant that the South Africans finished in second place of Group G.
  • Lenize Potgieter has been the star for South Africa and has managed to score 204 goals so far but will be hoping to be more involved than she was against England after managing just 17 goals in that game.

THE PREDICTION

South Africa have made the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time in their history but will come up against the most successful side of all time in Australia who are attempting to win the competition for a fourth straight time. The Australians are a scary proposition with their record speaking for itself and although South Africa have enjoyed a great tournament, this is likely to be a step too far with Australia set to make yet another final.
