THE PLAYERS

FABIO FOGNINI

  • Fognini won his third consecutive four-set match on Saturday as he showed plenty of battling qualities to overcome the hard-working Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
  • The fiery Italian will be seeking a second French Open quarter-final after reaching the last eight back in 2011 and he is certainly playing some of the most consistent tennis of his career at the moment.
  • Although he trails the overall head-to-head with Sascha Zverev, Fognini had the better of his opponent when they met in Monte-Carlo in April, with the Italian then going on to win first ATP 1000 Masters title.

ALEXANDER ZVEREV

  • It has once again been a turbulent Grand Slam for Alexander Zverev as he came through a five-set match with Dusan Lajovic in the third round after also going the distance with John Millman in his opener.
  • The world number five is still yet to really make the breakthrough in a major that his talent promises although last year's quarter-final exit at Roland-Garros remains his best showing.
  • Despite losing to Fognini in Monte-Carlo, the German has beaten him on clay before when they faced off in the Rome 2017 Masters so he will know exactly what he is up against.

THE PREDICTION

Still only 22, Zverev has plenty of time on his hands to make his mark on Grand Slam tennis but he has not been convincing in Paris and this tricky fourth round will put him to the test once more. Fognini's talent has never been in question but he appears to have found a confidence and consistency that has been lacking in years gone by and he will relish being the underdog here. The Italian will have plenty of support and if he can make a bright start then Zverev is likely to feel the pressure. Fognini could upset the odds in this one.
