FPL – When Was The Triple Captain Chip Used By The Top 1000 Players Last Season?
Here at The Stats Zone, we are producing a series of articles looking at the chip strategies used by the top 1000 players from the 2018-19 FPL season.
This article focuses on the TRIPLE CAPTAIN chip.
Over half of the top 1000 players chose to use their triple captain chip in single Gameweek 36. With most FPL players saving their chips throughout the season in order to prepare for the blank and double gameweeks, the fact this chip was predominantly used on GW36 indicates – in the 2018-19 season at least – that the bench boost chip was favoured over the triple captain for a double gameweek. Those players who favoured this strategy were not disappointed as Liverpool ran riot at home to Huddersfield with Salah (19), Robertson (14), Mane (13) and Alexander-Arnold (10) all recording double-digit hauls.
The second most popular gameweek in which the triple captain chip was used was DGW25. During this gameweek Manchester City and Everton were the only two teams to have multiple fixtures, due to City’s involvement in the Carabao Cup final. FPL managers who chose to put the armband on Sergio Aguero would not be disappointed as the Argentinian returned 19 points (thanks in large part to his hat-trick against Arsenal). It was however, his central defensive team-mate Aymeric Laporte who topped the points that week with 20 for a goal, an assist and a clean sheet across the two matches.
The third most popular choice was DGW32, where ten sides had a double gameweek. This strategy was predominantly used by those players who had already used their Bench Boost chip. Christian Eriksen topped the point scoring with 20 points.
Those players who used the chip on GW37 or GW38 will have saved the chip and were running out of time to use it.
