Maddison Inglis’ most eye-catching result of 2026 was right at the start of the year at the Australian Open, as she advanced through the qualifying stages and went on to reach the round-of-16, losing to six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek. She is still ranked well outside the top 100, though did make the final of a WTA 125 event in Vancouver. Inglis has already won twice in qualifying to enter the main draw.

The Australian faces Zeynep Sonmez in round one. The Turkish player has made two WTA 500 quarter-finals in 2026, and also produced some notable wins, including a straight sets win over Leylah Fernandez in Nottingham. Her last event was in Guadalajara, with Sonmez losing in straight sets to eventual winner Iva Jovic in the second-round. 

Inglis has the advantage of two competitive matches in Beijing, though Sonmez has been more consistent across the year against higher-level opposition.
