RICARDAS BERANKIS

  • World number 77 Ricardas Berankis overcame a difficult first match against the 29th seed Denis Shapovalov in straight sets to meet Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for the first time.
  • The Lithuanian will have played his first doubles match with Hungarian Marton Fucsovics on Wednesday and could be feeling the strain if this match passes the two-hour mark.
  • Berankis has twice before reached the second round at Wimbledon, in 2010 and 2015, and three of his last six matches at SW19 have gone to four sets or more.

JO-WILFRIED TSONGA

  • Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won his first-round match within the hour against a sorry Bernard Tomic and will move into the second round at Wimbledon fresher than most.
  • The 34-year-old was absent from last year’s tournament due to injury but he has progressed to the third round in his previous four appearances.
  • Five ATP rankings separate Tsonga and his next opponent Berankis, but the Frenchman is on his way back from an injury-hampered 2018 and his ranking belies his ability at this level.

THE PREDICTION

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga barely broke a sweat against Australia’s Bernard Tomic in the first round and so the 34-year-old has expended little energy as he works his way into this tournament. He will also be pleased with his second-round opponent Ricardas Berankis who, unlike Tomic, should offer plenty of fight but is ultimately coming up against a much better player. The Lithuanian could take a set, as Tsonga so often loses concentration, but not the match.
