- Glamorgan can only improve on last year’s showing in the Royal London One-Day Cup which saw them finish bottom of the southern group with seven defeats from eight matches, including a comprehensive nine-wicket defeat at Essex in these sides’ last meeting.
- Glamorgan have played one game in the County Championship so far this season, with Matthew Maynard’s men drawing at home to Northamptonshire in a match that saw three Glamorgan batters score centuries including Marnus Labuschagne and Billy Root on their First-class debuts for the club after signing over the winter.
- Both Labuschagne and Root are in the squad to face Essex, along with Kiran Carlson who also scored a century against Northamptonshire and is available for all of this year’s Royal London One-Day Cup matches after missing the whole of last year’s campaign. Meanwhile, all-rounders Andrew Salter and Craig Meschede will both feature after missing the County Championship opener.

- Essex will be hoping to break their unenviable record of eight consecutive quarter-final defeats in limited-overs competitions and go at least one step further than their play-off defeat to Yorkshire in last year’s Royal London One-Day Cup campaign after finishing second in the southern group table.
- Anthony McGrath’s side have made a mixed start to this season’s County Championship season. A crushing innings and 87-run defeat to Hampshire in their first match was followed up with a commendable draw at reigning champions Surrey which will have boosted confidence going into this tie with Glamorgan.
- England legend Alistair Cook looks set to play a key role for Essex this campaign after retiring from international duty while Ravi Bopara and Ryan ten Doeschata have both scored centuries in the County Championship already this season so Essex’s attacking options look strong. However, wicketkeeper Adam Wheater is out with an injured thumb so new signing Robbie White will deputise.
THE PREDICTION
These two sides’s contrasting form in last year’s Royal London One-Day Cup means Essex enter this match as favourites and will be confident of repeating last season’s crushing victory over Glamorgan to kick start their campaign. However their sluggish start to the County Championship season will give Glamorgan hope, especially the innings and 87-run defeat to Hampshire which saw all four of Essex’s bowlers concede over 100 runs and only Ravi Bopara score more than 62. Glamorgan look better equipped this year, with the additions of Marnus Labuschagne and Billy Root proving their talents by scoring centuries on their County Championship debuts, but Essex should still have enough to prosper in this fixture.
