THE TEAM NEWS

SAN DIEGO PADRES

  • The Padres enter this game with a record of 45-49 although they don’t enter this series in their best shape since they’re coming off a three-game sweep against the Atlanta Braves in their previous series. They own a 1-4 mark in their last five games, and a 3-7 record in their last ten outings. They’re also riding a four-game losing streak.
  • Their player to watch here will be Manny Machado. The slugger might not have made the All-Star Game this season, but is still having an impressive season with a .269 average and a .850 OPS, although he’s only hitting .200 in July. Fernando Tatis Jr. has been on a tear of late as well, hitting .383 in his last 15 games. They have OF Travis Jankowski, OF Franmil Reyes, and P Jose Castillo as their noteworthy injuries.
  • The Padres’ starting pitcher for this game will be Chris Paddack. He has a 5-4 record and a 2.83 ERA this season across 15 starts, striking out 87 batters and owning a 0.92 WHIP in 82.1 innings pitched.

MIAMI MARLINS

  • The Marlins are struggling even worse than the Padres, as they currently own the worst record in the National League – and one of the worst in all of baseball – with a 35-57 mark. They went 1-2 in their previous three-game series against the New York Mets, have gone 2-3 in their last five outings and 3-7 in their last ten contests. Those results will hardly inspire confidence in the fanbase.
  • It’s hard to standout a single Marlins player here, but we’ll go with Starlin Castro since he’s hitting .385 in the last 15 days, while Garrett Cooper has a .364 average and two homers over that same span. Their current IL includes players such as 3B Martin Prado, C Chad Wallach, 2B Jon Berti and P Pablo Lopez, as well as P Jose Urena.
  • Trevor Richards will start this game for the Marlins. Richards, who was given up a staggering 13 runs in 15 innings across his last three starts, owns a 3-10 mark and a 4.18 ERA in 2019. He has registered 88 strikeouts and a 1.34 WHIP in 99.0 innings pitched.

THE PREDICTION

The Marlins are by far one of the worst teams in the MLB this season and they have faced problems on both sides of the ball. The Padres might not be riding their best stretch of form, but they are a superior team on paper and Paddack shouldn’t have problems against a weak Marlins offense. Even though Miami won the last meeting between these two sides, San Diego are likely to come out on top in this game by a considerable margin.
