THE TEAM NEWS

USA

  • The United States begin their 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign with a game against Guyana which should present little threat to the current holders as they look to begin their defence with a win.
  • The USA lost their two warm-up matches with a narrow defeat to Jamaica followed by a 0-3 defeat against Venezuela but those defeats might serve them well as they bid to avoid complacency in the group stage.
  • Tyler Adams was a late withdrawal from the squad which will further weaken the United States’ defence but they will be looking to Christian Pulisic to pull the strings further up the field as they attempt to outscore the opposition.

GUYANA

  • Guyana head into the Gold Cup with little expectation and it might be considered a success if they manage to snatch a point in any of their matches but they have been handed a very tough opening game against reigning champions USA.
  • Guyana enjoyed a strong CONCACAF Nations League qualifying campaign and managed to win three of their four games but are going to face much tougher opposition in this competition.
  • Whilst they are not blessed with plenty of talent, the team ranked 177th in the world will have to work hard for one another whilst Emery Welshman will need to take any chances that come his way in front of goal.

THE PREDICTION

The United States have suffered a poor two years since claiming the 2017 Gold Cup as they failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. They have numerous new players in their squad which will help them attempt to begin righting the wrongs of that ill-fated campaign ahead of the 2022 qualifiers. They begin the defence of their Gold Cup crown with a game against the side with the lowest FIFA ranking in the competition in Guyana and anything else than a comfortable win for the US would be deemed a huge shock.
