THE PLAYERS

JAMES WADE

  • 2006 World Matchplay champion James Wade has reached six World Matchplay finals in total but has not gone further than the second round since 2015.
  • The Machine has seen a resurgence in form over the last year and has enjoyed a successful 2019 season to date with multiple tournament wins and an impressive Premier League campaign.
  • Wade ended a four-year wait for a TV title in some fashion when he won back-to-back TV tournaments at the European Championship and World Series of Darts Finals last Autumn.

JEFFREY DE ZWAAN

  • Jeffrey de Zwaan stunned Michael van Gerwen in round one last year when he defeated the world number one 10-6 on his debut at the World Matchplay. It was his second victory over MVG in successive major ranking tournaments having also ousted his countryman at the 2018 UK Open.
  • After beating Van Gerwen in the first round at Winter Gardens last year, the rising Dutch star defeated Adrian Lewis and Dave Chisnall in impressive fashion before losing to eventual champion Gary Anderson in the semi-finals.
  • Although De Zwaan has won a non-televised ranking tournament this year, he will be looking for an improvement in fortunes on the big stage having suffered early exits at the World Championship and UK Open in his last two major ranking tournament appearances.

THE PREDICTION

Wade has seen his career take an upward turn over the last year. His confidence is high and as a proven winner he is a very credible contender to go all the way in the tournament. He faces a very tough opening game against the talented De Zwaan who relishes the big stage and reached the semi-finals here in 2018. The young Dutchman might outscore Wade on the 180s and also finish with a higher average but Wade’s cool finishing can see him through to round two in a very competitive, close contest.
