THE PLAYERS

ADRIAN LEWIS

  • Two-time world champion Adrian Lewis has slipped down the rankings in recent times and has only made it further than the last 16 in two major TV ranking tournaments in the last three years.
  • Jackpot showed some signs of an upturn in form when he captured his first ranking title for two years at a Players Championship tournament in March.
  • Lewis has competed at the Matchplay in every year since making his debut back in 2005; he has not lost in the opening round since 2010 and has only done so twice in 14 appearances at the tournament.

GLEN DURRANT

  • Glen Durrant won three consecutive BDO World Championship titles before making the switch to the PDC at the start of 2019, shortly after winning for the third time at the Lakeside.
  • Duzza soon settled into life on the PDC tour by making it through to a final in only his second tournament after winning his tour card and he went on to win his first title a week later.
  • He stated that earning qualification for the World Matchplay was one of his main aims when switching across to the PDC so he is delighted to just be appearing at Winter Gardens for the first time.

THE PREDICTION

This is the tie of the round with both players having won multiple World Championship titles. Glen Durrant would certainly have been the player who all of the seeded players would want to avoid in the opening round and Adrian Lewis will rue his luck as he aims to try and work his way back up the rankings. Top class performances from Lewis aren’t as frequent as they used to be and he will need to be at his best to match the formidable challenge Durrant poses. It is likely that Duzza will bring out of the best in Jackpot but the Matchplay debutant will likely get over the line in a close encounter.
