THE TEAM NEWS

SENEGAL

  • Senegal progressed to just their second ever Africa Cup of Nations final to stand just 90 minutes away from claiming their first title after they sealed an extra-time victory over Tunisia.
  • Neither side were able to break the deadlock in a well-matched contest but the opening goal of the game was enough for Senegal to progress with that coming in the form of a Tunisian own-goal in the 100th minute of the game.
  • The victory was Senegal’s third consecutive 1-0 victory in the knockout stages but their sturdy defence that has conceded just one goal all tournament will be without key man Kalidou Koulibaly after he was suspended after picking up a harsh booking in the semi-final.

ALGERIA

  • Algeria left it late but made the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final as they maintained their 100% record in the tournament with a thrilling last-gasp victory over Nigeria in their semi-final.
  • The Algerians have won all of their games so far and managed all within 90 minutes other than when beating Ivory Coast on penalties in the quarter-final clash with them going ahead thanks to an own goal against Nigeria before Riyad Mahrez sealed the win.
  • Nigeria had levelled from the spot with just under 20 minutes remaining before Mahrez stepped up to hit a stunning free-kick in the fifth minute of stoppage time to put Algeria within 90 minutes of a second Africa Cup of Nations success but they will be without Youcef Atal for the final after he suffered a fractured collarbone in his side’s quarter-final.

THE PREDICTION

Algeria and Senegal have been the best two teams in the Africa Cup of Nations and it is only fitting that they meet in the final. Algeria got the better of their opponents here in the group stage as they sealed a 1-0 win and they will fancy their chances of earning the victory again which will see them lift the trophy. Senegal will have big boots to fill at the back as they will be without the suspended Kalidou Koulibaly and that blow could be decisive with Algeria’s settled side able to do enough to earn their first Africa Cup of Nations title since their only success in 1990.
