Alexander Zverev continued his progress at Flushing Meadows as he defeated Jacob Fearnley in straight sets for the third time this season to book his place into the third-round. The world number three broke in the very first game of the match and didn’t look back from there, winning 6-4 6-4 6-4 in two hours and 28 minutes.
He will now go up against Felix Auger Aliassime after he beat Roman Safiullin 6-1 7-6 7-6. The Canadian stormed into an early lead but was forced to save six set points in the second set, eventually getting through in straights. It was a more measured performance from Auger-Aliassime, who reduced his unforced error count and dug in when it was necessary.
Zverev leads the head-to-head 6-2 and 2-1 on outdoor hard court. Their last match was in March last year, with the German comfortably winning in the second-round of Miami. Auger-Aliassime is enjoying a resurgence of sorts, but Zverev is likely to prove too difficult a challenge.
