Yoshihito Nishioka vs Alexei Popyrin prediction
Due to problems with injury, Yoshihito Nishioka has featured in just one clay court match leading up to this event. It ended in defeat, as he lost in the first-round to Dusan Lajovic in Rome. Prior to that, he was scheduled to compete against Zizou Bergs in Madrid but withdrew from the tournament. The Japanese player had already withdrawn from three other tournaments this season.
Alexei Popyrin will be his opponent in the first-round. The 25th seed began his clay court season with an encouraging run all the way to the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters. The Australian then suffered a dip as he was dumped out of the next two events in the first-round and could only reach the third-round of the Italian Open before a loss to Daniil Medvedev. His last tournament was the Geneva Open where he reached the quarter-finals as the fifth seed but then fell to a disappointing straight sets loss to Cameron Norrie.
They’re yet to face each other on clay but Nishioka won their only previous encounter in the quarter-finals of an event in Adelaide at the start of 2023.
Popyrin has not won a first-round match at Roland Garros since 2019 as a 19-year-old but he should make it through here against an opponent short on match fitness.
