Villarreal preview: Gamble paid off

Villarreal’s billionaire owners, the Roig family, spent heavily last summer on the likes of Luiz Junior, Diego Conde, Willy Kambwala, Logan Costa, Nicolas Pepe and Thierno Barry – and it has paid off with Marcelino delivering a top five finish this season.

The Yellow Submarine secured their return to Europe’s elite club competition by defeating champions Barcelona away from home by three goals to nil at Estadi Olympic Lluis Companys with another brilliant summer signing, Ayoze Perez, notching a brace in that game.

Sevilla preview: Need to sort things out

In the last two seasons, Sevilla have required three permanent coaches to eventually push themselves away from the bottom three and the relegation places – and this season they also needed a change in management as the fallen giant steered clear of the danger zone.

Joaquin Caparros, in his fifth stint in charge, is overseeing a difficult start to the season with Sevilla’s supporters harshly criticising the supporters. They most recently went down to nine men and lost a 2-0 loss to Real Madrid at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan last weekend.

Villarreal team news: Couple of doubts

The aforementioned Ayoze Perez is now a doubt for Villarreal on the final day alongside key man Yeremy Pino. They also have a couple of confirmed longer-term absentees such as Raul Albiol and Ilias Akhomach.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Junior; Pau Navarro, Foyth, Costa, Sergi Cardona; Pepe, Santi Comesana, Dani Parejo, Alex Baena; Barry, Gerard

Unavailable: Raul Albiol (Injured), Akhomach (Injured)

Questionable: Yeremy Pino (Injured), Ayoze (Injured)

Sevilla team news: Suspension issues

As mentioned, Sevilla went down to nine men last weekend and the two men sent off, Loic Bade and Isaac Romero, are now missing through suspension for this one. Former Chelsea loanee Saul Niguez is a doubt alongside Switzerland international attacker Ruben Vargas.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Nyland; Juanlu, Marcao, Kike Salas, Jose Angel Carmona; Lukebakio, Gudelj, Agoume, Sow; Suso, Alvaro Garcia

Unavailable: Bade (Suspended), Nianzou (Injured), Adams (Injured), Isaac Romero (Suspended)

Questionable: Saul (Injured), Vargas (Injured)

Villarreal vs Sevilla prediction

Villarreal have been entertaining and effective this season. Achieving their pre-season goals of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, their 37 La Liga matches have consisted of 116 goals. They now face a Sevilla side that have been really poor in this calendar year and have arguably only got worse since Joaquin Caparros replaced Garcia Pimienta. As well as that and their absentees, Villarreal are firm favourites to finish their season with a flourish at El Madrigal.
