Loopy Godinez: The strawweight veteran looks to right the ship following a rough loss
9-6 in the UFC, Loopy Godinez (14-6) has established herself as a mainstay of the strawweight Top 15. She’s put together a few solid runs of results during that time, but having consistently lost to the upper echelon of the division, her ceiling as a middle of the pack contender looks to have been established. Godinez blends her kickboxing and grappling well, but does her best work in the wrestling department; it’s rarely exciting but she’s largely rag dolled anybody who wasn’t proven to be a legit talent at strawweight.
Ketlen Souza: Can the Brazilian powerhouse force her way into the division's Top 15?
Brazilian marauder, Ketlen Souza (17-6), enters this fight following the biggest win of her career, with “Esquentadinha” flatlining Ariane Carnelossi with a first round head kick in her last appearance. 4-3 under the UFC banner, Souza has a reputation as a dangerous finisher; when she wins, it tends to be in extremely brutal fashion. However, while she’s looked solid across her latest win streak, Souza has yet to beat an opponent ranked in the Top 15, with question marks remaining over her grappling and cardio against a high level foil.
Loopy Godinez vs Ketlen Souza prediction
We’re going with Godinez pretty confidently here.
Souza has been on an impressive run recently, but she has yet to post a win over anybody ranked in the Top 15. Godinez’s ceiling as a middle-of-the-pack strawweight has been established at this point in proceedings, but she typically only loses to the elite of the division; case in point, her last three losses have come against Tatiana Suarez, Virna Jandiroba, and current champ, Mackenzie Dern.
Souza’s best chance to win this looks to be via landing a big shot in the early goings, either finishing “Loopy” outright or jumping on her back for the submission while she’s dazed. The signs for this outcome aren’t particularly promising; Godinez has never been knocked out and has only ever been finished once, losing by submission to one of the division’s best grapplers in the aforementioned Tatiana Suarez.
Souza’s takedown defence rate of 53% is not great either; I don’t envision Godinez having much trouble in trying to get her to the mat. I believe she avoids the big early haymaker and leans on her wrestling to get this one done, earning a convincing decision to defend her spot in the rankings.
Prediction: Loopy Godinez to win by decision
