Allen Frye Jr.: Power puncher looks to bounce back from his first career setback

Allen Frye Jr. (6-1) arrived in the UFC with a perfect record built entirely on knockouts, five of them inside the first round, but was shut out last time by Guilherme Pat on his debut. A planned July return against Alvin Hines then fell through when Frye withdrew. He’s a pure orthodox power puncher who uses his 6’5” frame and 80 inch reach to load up on single shots, and he doesn’t mind a bit of dirty boxing. The issue is that he lands just 2.20 significant strikes per minute, offers little head movement, and was badly outpaced once Pat survived the early storm.

RJ Harris: “The Hammer” looks to stay perfect

RJ Harris (6-0) went from full-time lineman to UFC fighter in sixteen months, stepping in on a week’s notice in July to stop Alvin Hines in the first round with an uppercut. Five of his six wins have come inside the distance, a mix of knockouts and submissions built on a high school wrestling base. Where Frye loads up on single shots, Harris overwhelms with volume, landing 9 significant strikes per minute at 57% accuracy, although that comes from under two minutes of official UFC octagon time. He fights with forward pressure and loves an uppercut.

Allen Frye Jr. vs RJ Harris prediction

There’s a bit of symmetry here – Harris only got his UFC call up because Frye pulled out of the Hines fight, and now he gets the man he replaced. Only one of their twelve combined wins have gone past the second round, and I don’t think this one sees round two either. The question is whether Frye finds his big power shot before Harris’ pace and volume swallow him up, and I think we see the latter.

Frye is a stationary target with very little head movement, which is exactly what Harris can punish. Expect Harris to get after him from the opening bell, walking him down and landing in combinations. Frye doesn’t have the technical counter game to pick him off on the way in, and nothing he showed against Pat suggests he can slow down a high-output opponent. If Frye starts dipping his head to cover up, the uppercut will be the judgment that puts him down.

Frye’s reach and one-punch power keep him live in the exchanges, and at heavyweight a clean shot can change everything. The fight ending in the first could be the safer play, but I’m backing Harris to melt him early.

Prediction: RJ Harris to win by KO/TKO in round one
