Zachary Reese: Can "Savage" build on a solid win over Dusko Todorovic last time out?
Entering the UFC via DWCS with a shiny record of 5-0, things didn't exactly go according to plan for Zachary Reese (9-2) in his Octagon debut. "Savage" was brutally slammed unconscious by Cody Brundage in less than a round, but he's rebounded fairly well in his career since. Reese is 3-1 since his chastening debut defeat, most recently taking a unanimous decision victory over Dusko Todorovic in May. The American has proven to be a well-rounded combatant when he's allowed to settle into his rhythm, blending solid striking technique with well-timed bursts of offensive wrestling.
Sedriques Dumas: "The Reaper" returns to the Octagon aiming to avoid a second consecutive defeat
Another graduate of DWCS, Sedriques Dumas (10-3) is one of the promotion's more controversial fighters, given the American's history of troubling legal issues outside of the Octagon. "The Reaper" is a rangy striker with an underrated arsenal of kicks, although his subpar takedown defense has historically proven to be an issue during his fights. Dumas is 3-3 since joining the UFC, but while all of the American's victories have come by unanimous decision, he's been finished in every one of his losses. The most recent of these stoppages took place in Dumas' last outing, where he succumbed to first round punches from Michal Oleksiejzcuk at UFC 314.
Zachary Reese vs Sedriques Dumas prediction
While the oddsmakers rightly have him pegged as the underdog, Dumas could have a chance here.
While he's a dangerous finishing threat in his own right, Reese has proven susceptible to being overwhelmed early; a state of affairs that makes it difficult to ever reliably pick him to win fights. It's also worth considering the disparity in performances between the pair's sole mutual opponent, Cody Brundage. "The Reaper" scored a decision victory over Brundage, while Reese got slept with one of the most brutal slam KOs in recent in recent memory.
However, the loss to Brundage arguably underlines why Reese is likely to win this fight. "Savage" typically only loses to opponents who come out and bulldoze him before he has a chance to get going in earnest; Dumas arguably does not fit that mold. Reese also arguably has wins over much more solid levels of competition than his opponent, and Dumas has an unfortunate habit of getting completely destroyed by anybody on the outskirts of the rankings.
An two inch reach disadvantage aside, Reese has the edge in athleticism, power, and overall technique. By contrast, "The Reaper" is coming off a brutal TKO just last April, while his tumultuous personal life is hardly indicative of a fighter taking their martial arts career seriously. The pick is for "Savage" to score the stoppage via strikes in the second round.
Prediction: Zachary Reese to win via TKO
