THE PREDICTION
29-year-old Yulia Putintseva moved back up to world number 50 after a brilliant March saw her reach the round of 16 at Indian Wells and then the quarter-finals at the Miami Open, losing to Iga Swiatek and Victoria Azarenka, respectively. The Kazakh pulled out of Charleston earlier this month to see her come in cold on clay but this could be another huge week for the former number 27 on her favoured surface.
However, 25-year-old Yue Yuan brings a career-high WTA world ranking of 37th into the draw after a solid week in Rouen saw her exit at the quarter-finals stage to eventual champion Sloane Stephens. The Chinese also enjoyed a big campaign on the Sunshine Double, reaching the last eight at Indian Wells before defeat to Coco Gauff, as part of a nine-match winning streak from claiming her maiden WTA title in Austin. Yuan beat Putintseva in straight sets in Hobart back in January and, having picked up some results on clay last week, taking her to earn at least a set looks the sensible way to avoid a result here.
