THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Yue Yuan will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 68th after upsetting fourth seed Xinyu Wang in straight sets on Wednesday, backing-up an excellent three-set victory over former US Open champion Sloane Stephens in the first round. The Chinese finished runner-up to Jessica Pegula at the Korea Open late last season and then went on to reach a further three finals on the ITF circuit, winning one, to bring some very encouraging form into 2024.

World number 64 Yulia Putintseva also ended 2023 in reasonably strong fashion after a tough first two thirds but she suffered an opening loss to the aforementioned Xinyu Wang in Auckland last week. The Kazakh has improved considerably this week in Hobart to overcome last season’s runner-up, Elisabetta Cocciaretto, and fifth seed Marie Bouzkova in tough three-setters to make this a very tough call indeed. A first meeting between the two would likely go Putintseva’s way on her favoured clay but, taking recent form into account, back Yuan to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable semi-finalists.
