World number 63 Flavio Cobolli was the surprise package at the Next Gen ATP Finals late last season, impressing despite failing to get out of the group stage, and he brought that burgeoning form into 2024 with excellent runs to the third round at the Australian Open, where he stunned Nicolas Jarry, alongside quarter-final exits in Montpellier and Delray Beach. The Italian lost to Yoshihito Nishioka to the tune of just one game at the Los Cabos Open this time last month but he bounced back well in Acapulco, stunning Felix Auger-Aliassime before a competitive exit to Stefanos Tsitsipas, to suggest he can perform better in this rematch.
World number 71 Nishioka failed to qualify for Indian Wells last time out but the Japanese did so with gusto in Miami as he continues to build back from a lengthy injury.
