THE PREDICTION

21-year-old Jannik Sinner set a new career-high ATP world ranking of sixth last week after breaking his ATP Masters duck in Toronto, winning his first Masters title in his fourth final with a consummate result over Alex de Minaur. The Italian looks set for a collision course with contemporary rival Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals here one year on from their scintillating battle in the last eight went the Spaniard’s way in five sets. Sinner and Alcaraz played out two of the very best matches of recent years last season, with the Italian winning their encounter at Wimbledon, but the Spaniard has certainly found an extra level since their battle here last season. World number 54 Yannick Hanfmann blossomed on his favoured clay this summer to find the best form of his long career at 31 years old. The German brings a four-match losing streak into the US Open, though, with a 0-2 record on hardcourts since the start of the US swing suggesting Sinner will enjoy a relatively comfortable win here. Hanfmann is well capable of snatching a set if the Italian is off the pace but take Sinner to win in straight sets all the same.
