THE PREDICTION

27-year-old Christopher Eubanks changed his life with an incredible run to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in July, backing up a sudden burst into form on grass that saw him win a maiden ATP title in Mallorca. The American comes into his Shanghai debut ranked world number 32 but he has lost five of his last nine matches since Wimbledon in a totally understandable shift from perennial underdog to a seeded player. 31-year-old Yannick Hanfmann broke the top 50 for the first time this summer after his own career-best exploits on his favoured clay but he snapped a six-match losing streak on Wednesday in three tight sets over James Duckworth. A first meeting between the two should go Eubanks’ way on a hardcourt but Hanfmann should be better for a relieving win and Eubanks has not played in over five weeks since a tough exit at the US Open. Back Eubanks to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
