World number 38 Yue Yuan has lost each of her last two matches on clay comfortably but doing so to Sloane Stephens and an in-form Yulia Putintseva is now great embarrassment. The 25-year-old beat Xiyu Wang to win her maiden WTA title at the Austin Open in March, embarking on a nine-match winning streak before Coco Gauff ousted her in the quarter-finals at Indian Wells, and she looks the likelier victor against another compatriot here in Xinyu Wang, who is far from her most effective on clay. World number 42 Wang has produced some steady form in recent months, requiring top 30 opposition to oust her from each of her last four tournaments, but the more typical clay conditions in Rome should hamper her more than she found last time out in Madrid. Yuan beat Wang in straight sets in their first meeting in Hobart back in January and she can be backed to edge this encounter with the better recent level on clay.
