THE PREDICTION
World number 42 Xinyu Wang struggled to find her feet on clay last summer in singles, although she partnered Su-Wei Hsieh to the Women’s Doubles title at Roland-Garros to claim a career milestone. The 22-year-old is at her most effective on hardcourts, with a run to the round of 16 at the US Open requiring Karolina Muchova to beat her in three sets, but she has so far struggled to match that level this season despite flashes in Hua Hin and Miami. World number 81 Viktoriya Tomova has lost each of her last two on clay but a three-set result over clay-courter Mayar Sherif in Charleston suggests she can be competitive here. Wang beat Tomova as a teenage qualifier at the St. Petersburg Open back in 2019 but clay should level the playing field in their second tour-level encounter, although Madrid has a habit of forgiving the less enthusiastic players on this surface. Back Wang to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
