THE PREDICTION
World number 42 Xinyu Wang comfortably beat number 28 Elise Mertens in the first round here last season and she looks capable of doubling down here, albeit in much tougher circumstances. The 22-year-old burst into form on the late hardcourt swing to reach the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time at the US Open but it has been a relatively slow start to 2024 despite her run to the semi-finals of the Hua Hin Championships this time last month. 28-year-old Mertens finished runner-up to Emma Navarro at the Hobart International in January but she has struggled to make a dent on tour since. The Belgian has won two doubles titles here in the desert but she has failed to beat a player ranked inside the top 50 so far this season to suggest this is Wang’s to lose. Back the Chinese to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
