THE PREDICTION
22-year-old Emma Navarro could break inside the top 30 on tour for the first time after beating Magdalena Frech in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals of the Hobart International. The American made the step up from strong work on the ITF circuit to regular tour wins last May, with a quarter-finals on clay and semi-finals on grass and hardcourts going under the radar until her remarkable victory over Maria Sakkari in San Diego. The American will be seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time in her career next week, and on her Australian Open debut no less, to finally create some buzz on tour but first of all she looks well capable of claiming a maiden WTA title this week if she can maintain this level.
World number 77 Viktoriya Tomova is a surprise quarter-finalist after coming through qualifying as a lucky loser but she should not be underestimated on this second wind after conceding just one game to Tatjana Maria on Wednesday. Navarro’s confidence on court looks wholly unshakable right now but lucky losers are always capable of nothing-to-lose tennis. Take the cautious approach here with an outright win for Navarro.
TIP: EMMA NAVARRO TO WIN
