VIKTORIYA TOMOVA VS EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA PREDICTION
29-year-old Ekaterina Alexandrova set a career-high WTA world ranking of 15th after a brilliant run to the semi-finals of the Miami Open in March, stunning Iga Swiatek in straight sets before falling short against eventual champion Danielle Collins.
The Russian has struggled to match that intensity since but she snapped a five-match losing streak with victory over Cristina Bucsa at the Strasbourg Open last week and a three-set exit to Magda Linette is no great embarrassment on her weakest surface.
World number 75 Viktoriya Tomova stands a reasonable chance at an upset here if she can maintain the level that saw her reach the semi-finals of the Rabat Open, where she took the first set before defeat to eventual champion Peyton Stearns. The 29-year-old is at her best on clay but she will have to hope she meets the recent out-of-sorts version of Alexandrova here if she is to progress.
Alexandrova won their first round match in three sets this time last season in Paris and similar fare seems likely. Back Tomova to snatch a set to leave the victor up to chance.
