THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka has never been at her best on clay, claiming just one of her 21 career title son the surface at the Marbella Open in 2011, but she was a finalist here in 2011 and in Rome two years later to prove her all-court credentials at her peak. The 34-year-old has enjoyed an excellent start to 2024 with deep runs at the Australian Open, where she won her two Grand Slam titles in 2012 and 2013, Miami and a most recently on clay at the Charleston Open. Madrid’s high altitude should hand powerful players like the Belarussian an extra ounce of speed to limit clay’s dampening affect on their biggest weapons.

Azarenka should have more than enough to see her through this opener against Tatjana Maria but the German has recently thrived on high altitude clay with back-to-back Bogota Open titles in 2022 and 2023. 36-year-old Maria came back from a set down to stun Peyton Stearns in three tight sets on Tuesday and that is an impressive enough result to warrant some caution here. Back Azarenka to win outright.

TIP: VICTORIA AZARENKA TO WIN
