World number 88 Varvara Gracheva came back from a set down to upset sixth seed Maria Sakkari on Monday, thrilling home crowds who have taken her under their wing despite only recently changing allegiances from Russia to France.
The 23-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 39th at the start of the season, after an excellent 2023, and her poor form since has been rather concerning considering the potential she showed in patches last year. Clearly pleasantly surprised by both her level and the love she felt from home crowds on Simonne-Mathieu, expect Gracheva to be emboldened on her return to the court for this second round clash with clay specialist Bernarda Pera.
World number 80 Pera, who herself changed allegiances with a move to the USA at 16 years old, conceded just two games to Nao Hibino on Monday and she should not be underestimated after a run to the round of 16 here last season.
Neither player brought much form into Paris but Gracheva is far better than her current ranking suggests and she is likely to thrive under the glow of more partisan support. Back the Frenchwoman to win.
