THE PREDICTION
World number 62 Jack Draper came back from a set down to beat Miomir Kecmanovic in an early contender for match of the year on Wednesday, saving match points in the second set and coming back from 4-1 down in the deciding tiebreak to edge a marathon near-four hour clash. Recovery may be an issue for the Brit after such an effort but he will be flying high after avenging the toughest defeat of his young career, with Kecmanovic beating him in two tight tiebreaks in the Davis Cup Finals last November to scupper Great Britain’s chances of progression. World number 14 Tommy Paul conceded just five games to qualifier Alex Bolt in his first match of the year to bring plenty of excess energy into this second meeting with Draper, who upset the American in the second round here in Adelaide exactly a year ago to the day of this quarter-final.
Paul went on to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open to change the course of his career but one comfortable win over Bolt so far in 2024 makes this a contest of fitness versus match practice as much as general ability. Back Draper to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
