THE PREDICTION
This should be a good-natured and thrilling clash between two home hopefuls in 17th seed Tommy Paul and up-and-coming Alex Michelsen, who beat Jaume Munar handily on Thursday to win on his Indian Wells debut. The 19-year-old reached the final of the Newport Open in only his second tour-level campaign last summer, finishing runner-up to Adrian Mannarino, and he stunned Alex de Minaur at the Los Cabos Open two weeks ago before a very tight defeat to eventual champion Jordan Thompson in the quarter-finals. 26-year-old Paul won his second ATP title at the Dallas Open this time last month, beating Ben Shelton en-route, but he brings a two-match losing streak into Indian Wells after finishing runner-up to Taylor Fritz in Delray Beach before a consummate loss to Jack Draper in Acapulco last week. The elder American should recover in time to edge through this clash but Michelsen has impressed throughout the last few months to suggest three sets are likelier than two. Back Paul to win outright or consider at least a set in favour of the youngster.
TIP: TOMMY PAUL TO WIN
